Strategies of Stimulating Students'Motives in English Language Learning

Abstract

Motivation has been considered as a key factor in second language acquisition. High motivation can undoubtedly arouse students’ learning interest and make language learning effective. Conversely, low motivation affects learning efficiency. Because it plays a very important role in students’ English learning process , there should be some practical strategies for teachers to promote their students’ learning motivation. This thesis is intended to first introduce some views about motivation from the viewpoint of psychology, education, and sociology. Then it analyzes students’ learning motivation based on the very basic frame proposed by Gardner and Lambert’s integrative and instrumental motivation pattern. And then it gives the Affective filter hypothesis and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theories in foreign language learning. At last, 10 effective strategies are put forward for motivating English language learning .

摘  要

在2語習得研究的發展過程中,動機始終是影響學習效果的1個關鍵因素。動機欲強無疑會提高學生的學習興趣及學習效率;反之,動機不強則會大大影響學習效果。基於動機在學生的英語學習過程中扮演着如此舉足輕重的角色,那麼如何激發學生外語學習動機又顯得尤爲重要。鑑於此,本論文首先將對在心理學、教育學、社會學領域裏關於動機的1些相關觀點進行講述;其次,本論文將基於Gardner和Lambert提出的融入型動機和工具型動機的分類框架分析學生英語學習動機的'類型;再次,本論文對外語學習中有關動機的情感過濾假說和馬斯洛的需要層次理論進行論述。最後,根據以上理論提出10條有效策略來激發英語學習動機。
