Effects of background knowledge on the teaching of English reading

Abstract
 
Comprehension is an interactive process between the reader’s background knowledge and the text. Although some cues are provided in the passage, reading cannot be finished without necessary background knowledge. People may know the meaning of Words, but they can never understand the whole passage or deep meaning if it is lack of background knowledge. Background knowledge plays a crucial role in reading. On the other hand, reading to activating background knowledge is a prerequisite for a successful reading. Hence, reading should be the result of interacting between linguistic knowledge and their own would knowledge.
The purpose of this article is to introduce the background knowledge and its effects on English reading in order to prove the vital role of background knowledge in reading comprehension. Based on this discussion suggested methods are available for employing background knowledge in English Reading.

摘  要

閱讀理解是讀者知識(背景知識)與篇章資訊相互作用的結果。在閱讀時,讀者的背景知識是10分必要的.缺乏背景知識,理解是不完整的,片面的`,就會出現只能理解文中每1個單詞的意思卻無法理解文章的整體或深層意思的現象。因此,理解應是語言知識和讀者腦中各種知識相互作用的結果。然而,激活背景知識是閱讀成功的先決條件。這篇文章的目的是闡敘背景知識以及它在英語閱讀中的作用來證明在英語閱讀中背景知識的重要性。在此基礎上,提出合理運用背景知識來促進英語閱讀教學水平的提高的幾種有效方法。
