A Tentative Study of Translator Competence
Abstract
As translating is a mental, multi-factorial activity, it cannot be exhaustively investigated within a linguistic framework ignoring the translator. Therefore, it is safely to say that the translators play a key role in the process of translating, because whether a translation is good or not depends on the translator competence. After summarizing the translator competence from other learners, this thesis attempts to analyze it from the following three aspects: the importance of the translator, the capabilities a translator should own, and a comparison among the different versions to the same literature work. By means of explaining, comparing, analyzing and concluding, this thesis simply analyzes the capability of translators not only in the theories but in the case of A Psalm of Life from the above three aspects. Only in this way can the author distinguish the individual translator competence through comparing and stress the translator’s advantageous capabilities through comparing between human translation and MT.

摘 要
翻譯是1種心理及各方面因素的行爲,它不能忽略譯者的存在而在語言結構裏獨立而徹底的完成。譯者在翻譯當中起了相當關鍵的作用,譯者能力的好壞直接影響到譯本的'質量。本文結合前人對譯者能力的分析，主要從譯者的重要性、譯者應具有怎樣的能力、同1文學作品的翻譯比較這3方面着手，嘗試性地分析了譯者的能力。本文既從理論上系統地分析了譯者的能力，又以《人生頌》爲例從實際上探討了不同譯者的各種能力。另外本文主要採用解釋、比較、分析和總結等方法在這3個方面上簡單地闡述譯者的能力。只有透過比較這種方法才能區分每個譯者的能力，並且透過機器翻譯與人爲譯者的比較，突出譯者的優越性。
