On Symbolism in The Great Gatsby
Abstract
Fitzgerald is ranked among the greatest realism American writers of the 20th century. The Great Gatsby stands for his masterpiece. In the novel, rich and delicate use of symbolism is achieved, which depicts the rottenness of the American Dream. This thesis probes into the use of symbolism in the novel. The first part of this thesis presents the definition and function of symbolism, and then comes a brief introduction to characteristics of symbolism. The second part makes an analysis of symbolic images in The Great Gatsby, including color images, creature images and nature images. Finally, this thesis analyses the artistic value of symbolism from the depiction of characters and exposition of human aspiration and destiny. This thesis aims at promoting the understanding of the implication of symbolism in The Great Gatsby.

摘 要
菲茨傑拉德是美國210世紀1位偉大的現實主義作家，其代表作《了不起的蓋茨比》贏得了評論界的高度評價。在小說中，菲茨傑拉德以其豐富而精湛的象徵手法成功地展示了210年代“美國夢”破滅的歷史全程。本文闡述了象徵藝術在小說中的運用。第1部分介紹了象徵手法的定義、作用和特點。第2部分從顏色、物體和自然環境3個方面分析了《了不起的蓋茨比》中的象徵意象的運用。第3部分主要從人物性格的刻畫，對人物精神與命運的剖析兩個方面論述象徵主義在《了不起的蓋茨比》中的應用。本文旨在使讀者更好地理解《了不起的'蓋茨比》中象徵主義的藝術價值和意義。
