36. all thumbs 笨手笨腳的
A: Have you tried drawing before?
A: 你有沒有畫畫過呢?
B: I'm all thumbs when it comes to drawing.
B: 我對畫畫是很笨手笨腳的。
"all thumbs" (原意:長了全部都是大姆指)和 "clumsy" 都是用來形容笨拙的的樣子。
37. have a finger in the pie 介入某件事
A: Do you think I should tell Angela that I saw her boyfriend with another girl?
A: 你覺得我該不該告訴 Angela 我看見她男朋友跟別的女生在一起?
B: I don't know. Sometimes, it's not always a good idea to have your finger in the pie.
B: 我不知道。有時候, 介入別人的事不一定是好的。
用 "have a finger in the pie" (原意:把手指伸進派裏)來指「介入一件事情」應該是蠻實際, 也很好記的。
美國人崇尚「自主的想法」, 因此對別人說話時也一般來說比較婉轉。他們很少會直接告訴你 「他覺得你應該如何做」, 而習慣用類似分析的方式和你談話, 但最後的決定是你自己的。
38. keep up with 趕上某事(人)
A: Did you see Annabelle yesterday? I love that dress.
A: 你昨天有沒有看見 Annabelle? 我好喜歡那件洋裝喔!
B: I know. She always tries to keep up with the latest trend(s).
B: 是呀(我知道)。她總是儘量地趕上最新的流行趨勢。
"keep up with" 是趕上的意思, 可用在人或事物上面。
"trend"是一件事的.趨向走勢。如果要形容一個人穿著很時髦, 就可以說"She(He) is a trendy dresser."。
39. plastic 信用卡
A: Oh, no! I forgot to get any cash! I hope this restaurant accepts plastic!
A: 糟糕了! 我忘了領現金! 希望這家餐廳收信用卡!
B: Don't worry. I've got some cash on me.
B: 沒關係。我身上有點現金。
美國人常把信用卡戲稱爲"plastic money"(塑料做的錢), 也可以光說"plastic" 就可以了。
40. hit the books 唸書
A: Hey! The X-Files is on. You're missing it.
A: 嘿! The X-Files 在播囉! 你已經在錯過了喔!
B: I know, but I've got to hit the books.
B: 我知道, 但是我必須唸書。
電視節目正在播出就是用"on"這個字。如"There's nothing on TV right now."就是「現在正在播出的節目都不好看。」的意思。
"hit" 是一個很好用的字。很多口語裏都會用這個字來表示「做」跟其後接的字有關的事, 好比"hit the gym"(去健身房)、"hit the road(上路)等。
